If you want to draw near (really near) than is the telephoto lens your admission ticket. You can get yourself a usually telephoto lens (for example with a fixed focal length of 200 mm) and no tele zoom (for example there you can zoom between 80 mm – 300 mm), if you detect that you are to far or to near you just can move your own position.
With a tele zoom could you easily draw near if you are to far from the scene – draw far if you are to near from the scene. I use tele zoom for everything from portrait to sport and to the point of architecture scenes (I zoom in parts of buildings instead of the whole building)

…people (portrait) or sport-scenes.
